Gaming gave Logan Hale something to hold onto while he battled childhood leukemia. During his extended hospital stays, the console became a link to the outside world — a way to experience moments of joy and connection throughout an exhausting ordeal.
He also drew strength from his admiration for Christian McCaffrey. The first time he saw the San Francisco 49ers running back take the field, he turned to his mom and said, “That’s who I want to be like.” That connection stayed with him throughout treatment, and at 13, Logan was laid to rest in a McCaffrey jersey.
Before he passed, Logan shared one wish: that other kids facing serious illness would have access to gaming so they could experience the same comfort and connection it gave him.
When McCaffrey heard Logan’s story, he turned that wish into action and launched The Logan Project, providing gaming consoles to children’s hospitals across the country and connecting young patients with the athletes who inspire them.
McCaffrey is highlighting The Logan Project for the NFL’s annual My Cause My Cleats campaign, which allows players to shine the spotlight on mission-driven organizations and issues they are passionate about by wearing custom-designed cleats representing their chosen cause. For McCaffrey, it’s a fitting way to keep Logan’s legacy of selflessness alive.
“Every time I look down at these cleats, it’s a massive honor,” McCaffrey said. “I know his spirit is here with me.” So far, The Logan Project has delivered consoles to hospitals in 22 NFL cities — and it’s McCaffrey’s goal to increase that number every time he shares Logan’s story.
“I think about the impact that Logan had on the world,” McCaffrey said. “And it’s an honor to give back.”
