As we reflect on Black History Month and how far we've come as a nation, we acknowledge that there is still much more work to be done. Antong Lucky, master trainer and engagement director at Urban Specialists, took a moment to reflect on what Black History Month means to him, and shared the following statement:
"So Black History Month for me is tapping into that wave of tenacity and resolve displayed strongly by our ancestors. That infinite intelligence and supreme wisdom to forge ahead in spite of the many obstacles. It is constantly a reminder for me of my obligation to continue fighting for those at the bottom.
I stand on the shoulders of countless African American giants of yesterday who fought and died for me to enjoy the liberties I have today. See, Black History Month for me has always been a moment I designate to recharge the batteries of a soul tied to those before me, to pay homage, to be grateful and to study the blueprint of advancing the freedoms for those of tomorrow.
That infinite intelligence is captured in profound snapshots throughout history by men and women of African descent who never capitulated to the idea of being three fifths human being, but instead offered us great wisdom and strategy to move us forward. Audre Lorde once said, 'It is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences.'
Black History Month is about rolling up our collective sleeves and making those ideals of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness available to everyone. I am recharged and pumped up as we all continue to nudge this great country along. We must do so in love and togetherness, regardless of race, gender or creed.
Black History is American History, and I look forward to the day that there is no distinction between the two. Happy Black History or better yet, happy American History."
