Amazing story we recently received on Khan Academy’s testimonial page:
-------
I cannot thank Khan Academy enough.
At age 21 I was a high school drop out working in construction without any real life direction. I also had recently gone through an unplanned pregnancy with my ex so I had shared custody over a child. I thought my life wouldn't amount to much and I was miserable. I had no working knowledge of science but I got hooked on biology from watching documentaries in the evenings. One day I decided that I wanted to learn more and begun to poke around through forums to find out what it would take to get a better understanding of science without going back to school. I came across Khan Academy through an online search and was stunned to discover that I could learn everything that I missed in high school online for free. After just 3 months of obsessing over learning I managed to complete the entire high school programme for biology and chemistry.
At this point I was hooked on science and it's all I wanted to talk and read about in my spare time. It was getting so bad that I was taking days off work just to learn more as I didn't have enough time during the day. Eventually I was told by my manager that if I didn't go to university he'd fire me. So I enrolled at my local university and was terrified that I wouldn't be able to keep up. After all, I had no high school qualifications and I was surrounded by students who were all more qualified than I was. Additionally, I had next to no money to live on. The student allowance wasn't much more than the cost of my rent and I had my daughter part time too. I resorted to doing clinical trials and asbestos removal to get by. I took it one day at a time and eventually I got my first exam grades back. I managed to get an A- in biochemistry. Before I didn't think I belonged there but after that grade I though maybe, just maybe, I could do it.
Fast forward 4 years and I ended up with a first class honours degree in biochemistry and am now looking to start my PhD. I also met the love of my life at university who is also a biochemist. I couldn't have done that without Khan Academy. I owe so much to you guys, thank you so much.
I was thinking I should make a large donation, but on the other hand I now have student loans to pay off. For now I'll leave you with an IOU
Cheers!
