Scott Strode

For years, I battled alcohol and drug addiction. After one particularly dark night, I knew I had to make a change – or else. To keep my mind off of using, I joined a boxing gym and started rock climbing. Every time I stood on top of a mountain, I was a little more climber and a little less addict.

The power of fitness and a supportive community helped me transform my life. I wanted to empower others to do the same. I was already climbing with another sober guy and a friend who is social worker, so we thought, “Let’s take a few more people out with us next time.” We started with a bike ride and then climbing. Over time, The Phoenix grew from 60 people to a hundred people to a thousand people. Today, more than 27,000 people have battled their addiction in partnership with The Phoenix.

Our nation faces a devastating opioid crisis. The Phoenix is twice as effective at helping people stay sober as the best treatment centers in the country. Thanks to the Stand Together community, we have almost doubled the number of people we can serve. And, we are on track to scale enormously and help hundreds of thousands rise, recover, and transform their lives.
