Leading Criminal Justice Reform Advocate to Amplify Powerful Voice and Experience in New Partnership
ARLINGTON, VA – Stand Together, an organization dedicated to empowering others to improve their lives, today announced that Alice Marie Johnson will officially join the team as an advocate to amplify her work in reforming the nation’s criminal justice system.
Alice Marie Johnson served 21 years in prison for nonviolent drug trafficking in Memphis, Tennessee and was sentenced to life +25 years in prison without the possibility of parole. Her life sentence was commuted by President Donald Trump, with the help of Kim Kardashian West. After her sentence was commuted, Alice partnered with Stand Together Senior Vice President, Mark Holden, and advocated for the successful passage of the bipartisan First Step Act.
An ordained minister, mother, and great-grandmother, Alice looks forward to sharing her inspirational story and platform with Stand Together to further advance criminal justice reforms within the community and government.

Alice Marie Johnson of Stand Together said:
“After I served my time, I wanted to use my voice to help those who have been left behind. There are too many people – good people – lost in the criminal justice system. I’m excited to join Stand Together to supercharge my efforts to help every person rise. Together, we will work to uplift our communities, help businesses embrace second-chance hiring, and support policies that will reimagine the justice system so that sentencing is reasonable and proportionate, and rehabilitation is possible and prioritized for all.”
Stand Together SVP Mark Holden said:
“There are many people who work tirelessly to reform our nation’s two-tiered criminal justice system, but I don’t know any who works harder than Alice Marie Johnson. Alice has become a voice for the voiceless and a great friend to all hoping to improve their lives. Alice is one of the main reasons why the First Step Act was signed into law. We are grateful for Alice’s commitment to this cause and are excited for her role with Stand Together to support reforms that will lift up our nation.”
Alice Marie Johnson’s book, “After Life: My Journey from Incarceration to Freedom” is available now.
